I started playing in Hyderabad, and every step after that taught me something different about tennis and myself. Later, I played Division I tennis at Long Beach State from 2017 to 2021. That journey is my experience, not a guaranteed route or a formula every Indian junior should follow.
Build a clear player story
Recruiting can feel like a search for one number that explains everything. Rankings matter, but they are only part of a player’s picture; results, development, academics, and the right college fit matter too. Be ready to describe your tennis honestly, including what you are working to improve.
Make the process manageable
Start by organizing your playing record, current information, and goals so you can share them clearly when you contact college programs. Research schools rather than sending the same message without considering what each program offers. Keep track of conversations and follow up thoughtfully.
Look beyond the court
A college tennis decision also affects your education and daily life, not just your next season. Ask practical questions about academics, the team environment, and what support is available to international students. A scholarship is never something anyone can promise, so seek clear answers about the options and expectations that apply to you.
My move from Hyderabad to Long Beach was one chapter in a longer tennis journey. If you are beginning yours, focus on making your player story clear and finding a program that fits the person behind the ranking.
